India's capital Awakens to Hazardous Pollution After Festival of Lights

On Tuesday morning residents of the world's most polluted city found themselves exposed to extremely polluted air that was classified as the "critical" range.

Alarming Pollution Measurements

Multiple areas of the city recorded an pollution measurement above 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the safe limit established by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times higher than healthy levels.

Pyrotechnics Ban and Recent Changes

Since 2020, officials had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the dangerous pollution that covers the city as the cold season begins.

However in recent months, the recently formed regional leadership approached the supreme court to propose a modification of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – historically doubted by environmental experts as being only about 30% lower impact – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and environment".

Court Verdict and Reality

Much to the frustration of public health and environmental campaigners, the court agreed to the proposal, mandating that green firecrackers could be used during limited hours throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was extensive disregard of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener type.

Many air quality sensors throughout the capital recorded air quality reaching highest levels around midnight to the most severe measurements observed during the festival in at least recent memory.

International Implications

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during Diwali also triggered a blame game with neighbouring Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab pointing to deteriorating air quality in their urban centers on pollutants coming from India following the celebrations.

Persistent Pollution Crisis

Extremely elevated concentrations of pollution in the city have continued as a serious problem for over a decade and a half, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

During celebratory seasons, the concentration of toxic airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been observed to shoot up to significantly exceeding the peak readings ever documented in the Chinese city, which was formerly regarded as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Diverse Pollution Contributors

The situation in Delhi is resulting from a mix of different contributors including transportation pollution, dust, construction activities, garbage fires and pollutants from crop residue ignition in adjacent areas of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, agricultural workers routinely set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, creating dangerous pollution that remains stagnant over the city as winter air arrives.

Health and Economic Toll

The economic and health toll on the approximately 33 million residents residing in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to various studies.

This pollution leads to increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung diseases, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

The pollution is estimated to be responsible for approximately 10k untimely deaths per year in the capital.
